Week 1: 3D SCULPTURE: Self Space Place
Week 1: So for the first week in our 3D SCULPTURE: Self Space Place, we were tasked with crafting ten sketches of any kind to get into the mindset of thinking of the self, space, place, and how to utilize all three in our future endeavors in our class. For these pieces, I was thinking about how these shapes would utilize the space around and how it would it affect the self and its place.
For Craft, I utilized basic sketching paper and a mechanical pencil. I did this because it would appear clearly on the scanner. If it is to be useful for me in the future, it has to be functional. I worked in a spontaneous workflow with little direction in the way of planned out execution. Some designs worked while others obviously failed. I worked in two rows of three for a clear display of the sketches. Using the concepts of 3D space and illusion of depth, I was able to create figures and shapes that take up space and for some, form a place.
For Composition, I initially started with geometric shapes with the placement of the sketches in a 3x2 grid group. This made the images orderly but it did not evolve the composition. But what it did was give me plenty of space to create my figures. For the first few, I stuck to more structured and conventional geometric figures. After creating a few, I switched to a more organic workflow and the placement of the images became looser and mirrored the creature/organic appearance of the sketches. I even experimented with impossible shapes with the middle top sketch of the second page.
For Concept, it was very open-ended. There was little in the way of requirements for the concept besides utilizing the concept of self, space, and place into the design. I emphasized place and Space primarily in my sketches. As a result, I initially started with geometric designs which evolved into creature design with a geometric emphasis. When it did become more about figures and creatures, the sense of self became more significant in how I created the sketches. The creatures themselves were the self, organic beings that dwell in a place in space.
