Week 14: Final Assembly of Final Project

Week 14: This week, we begin to finish our work on our final project. This week we glue and decorate our mini galleries. These are the results.

Craft: For the craft, I used the following tools: the Baltic plywood cutouts, masking tape, wood glue, and weights. From the previous week, we used baltic plywood, a sturdy and high-quality wood for the sides of the mini gallery. Masking tape would connect the pieces temporarily until using wood glue, I was able to glue them in place. The weights were used to keep the wood together as the glued dried to prevent and pockets of air or curled wood from forming. As we used a limited resource pool of wood for our projects, making sure that all things were accounted for and materials were used responsibly was a major consideration.  I did not want to waste a piece of wood by gluing the wrong side or not aligning them properly or mishandling them. Making sure the sides were in proportion, and understanding how scale would play into its final construction were important for our consideration of space, place, and the self because proportion would play a key part in exactly how tall, long, and wide the final results would be when thinking of the idea of scale in relation to the self and for practicalities of space for said place. This would play a key part in how large the mini art pieces would be in relation to the human scale inside.

Composition: For the composition of this assignment, what I did first I had to cut the boards out. This was done the previous week. After that, I taped them together to make sure there were no mistakes. After that, I took it apart and glued the pieces one by one starting with the facades. Since these had the second frame within to support the structure, I had to make sure that they aligned or else everything else would be misaligned and not fit correctly. After I had the pieces glued, I glued on mini pictures of my art onto the residual wood frame cuts that would be the picture frames without worrying that the walls will be slanted or skewed. The painting of the walls will be simple. I intend to paint the gallery a plain white so the focus is solely on the artwork. I wanted to make sure the large open space with the skylight was correctly glued or else the whole gallery would look strange if I shone a light through it.

Concept: The concept of the assignment was to create a 3D wood sculpture of an art gallery that would represent us.  For the art that will be inside, I wanted it to mirror that of the structure itself. As a result, the pictures the images are large, six and seven feet across in proportion. In the center, the creature 3D print I made will take center stage under the skylight. I wanted to create a gallery in which it would be a singular room of grand scale, like an atrium which to me are the architectural designs that I enjoy the most. I also wanted to utilize natural light as much as I can so that is why I added a large skylight and storefront windows. I feel much more at home and at ease with natural lighting, even if it is a gray and rainy day. And from the galleries that I have attended, one in which natural light has been utilized have always been memorable and inviting. I feel less restricted which is something I wanted in my art gallery. I decided that a large room akin to an atrium would be the most appropriate setting for me as it would focus a lot in space which would transform the view of the person, the self, into a place which exudes an awe in the viewer for what art I would put into space. And with the 3D sculpture in the center, the space is meant to be reminiscent of the David sculpture in Galleria dell'Accademia.
