Week 13: Cutting and Preliminary Assembly of Final Project
Week 13: This week, we continued to work on our final project, a collaborative project with the other groups in our class to create an art gallery for ourselves. This week we finalized and cut out the layouts of our mini galleries. Now we are beginning to assemble them. This are the results.
Craft: For the craft, I used the following tools: Zing Laser Cutter, Baltic Plywood, masking tape, a ruler, Adobe Illustrator, a computer, and flash drive. Similar to previous wood cutting assignments for our class, we used baltic plywood, a sturdy and high-quality wood. It would form the structure of the project we had composed. To cut it, we utilized the Zing Laser Cutter, a very robust and reliable laser cutter. As it was precise and fine-tuned, we had to make sure that the settings were correct to negate any possible errors. This was achieved using Adobe Illustrator and a Mac computer to input the files directly into the laser cutter. For assembly, I used masking tape to hold the pieces together and to make sure that the shapes were correct in proportion and should there be a mistake, I would then be able to correct them. As we will be using a limited resource pool of wood for our projects, making sure that all things were accounted for and materials were used responsibly was a major consideration. Making sure things were in proportion, and understanding how scale would play into its final construction were important for our consideration of space, place, and the self because proportion would play a key part in exactly how tall, long, and wide the final results would be when thinking of the idea of scale in relation to the self and for practicalities of space for said place.
Composition: For the composition of this assignment, what I did was set up the Zing Laser Cutter. As we have a specific process here to minimize mistakes, I had to follow a guide of procedure and set up. Following starting up the laser cutter, I connected the laptop provided to the cutter and opened Illustrator with my file from my flash drive. After making sure the point width of the illustrator lines were 0.001in as dictated by the laser's guidelines, I placed the baltic wood (24inx12in) into the cutter and printed out the shapes. We had a four board limit so I had to make sure and double check the files so that there were no mistakes. Following cutting the boards, I taped them together to make sure there were no mistakes. Unfortunately, there were some minor ones. Luckily, I had only cut out three boards so a fourth board could suffice for the mistakes. Making sure the spacing the correct and that it looked proportional to what I wanted was a big deal for me. I wanted to make sure that it had a large open space with a skylight which it did so now when I create the figures to go inside it, the scaling and sense of a large place will be correct.
Concept: The concept of the assignment was to create a wood cutout that would be the 3D wood sculpture of an art gallery that would represent us. The 2D design draft that we did last week has now been created as a physical woodcut design scaled down to that of around a shoe box in size. I wanted to create a gallery in which it would be a singular room of grand scale, like an atrium which to me are the architectural designs that I enjoy the most. I also wanted to utilize natural light as much as I can so that is why I added a large skylight and storefront windows. I also added around window atop akin to a church or chapel. As the ceiling will be some thirty feet up, the scale and feeling of that of a cathedral or a large central atrium were what I was going for in this assignment. I feel much more at home and at ease with natural lighting, even if it is a gray and rainy day. And from the galleries that I have attended, one in which natural light has been utilized have always been memorable and inviting. I feel less restricted which is something I wanted in my art gallery. I decided that a large room akin to an atrium would be the most appropriate setting for me as it would focus a lot in space which would transform the view of the person, the self, into a place which exudes an awe in the viewer for what art I would put into the space.
