Week 2: Plant Sketching - Garden VR

Week 2: This week for our class, we were divided into three groups. For the semester, we will be working with each other on various projects. Our teams are as followed: Laser cutter, 3D printer, and Virtual Reality. I was assigned the VR group. Our first assignment for our group was illustrating plants and from understanding how they work and appear, we were tasked with making up our own and transferring them into a community garden file on Tilt Brush, an app with VIVE headset capabilities.

Craft: We used a thick drawing paper that we folded in half, drawing pencils, and pencils. We also also used our phones to take snapshots of plants to use for our sketching. For that, we simply took out our phones and took snapshots of the plants that we found interesting and compelling. We created ten sketches of plants we took photos of around the Visual Arts Center. From there, we created five made up plants for our next assignment, creating a virtual reality garden plot with five real and five made up plants inhabiting it.

Composition: We first started off heading outside to take photos of plants that we would be sketching and using as references for later things. After spending an hour of photographing plants, we then proceeded to go about sketching those plants onto paper. While the composition of the photos was not that important what we decided was beneficial was to have as much of the plant in view as possible. With the leaves clearly visible and easy to recreate, it would make the job of recreating them in drawing and in the VR world much easier. We did this for a while, using techniques we had learned in other classes in order to recreate the plants on paper. Following that, we were instructed to use ideas of plant morphology to create unique and interesting plants of our own. That is what the last five plants are

Concept: We were to create accurate and clear illustrations of plant life that we had photographed earlier. For photographing them, it was obvious that the concept was to document them and find ways to combine plants to create our own later on. We were then to create illustrations of plants that we were to make up based on the ideas of plants we observed. The concept of creating these plants is to create a virtual reality garden. This is our first step in our project. Before we can go into and create works in the VR world, we first must understand what it is that we are designing. Should, for example, I decided to reinvent a leave to be massive in scale, self would be an important notion to consider. And if said leaf were to act as a roof or sorts, place and space would have to be taken into account.
