Week 10: Sculptris Creature
Week 10: This week, we switched from the 3D program of TinkerCad to the 3D modeling program of Sculptris. We were instructed with creating a creature that represents us in a way. After some trial and error, this was the result.
Craft: For the craft, I used a computer, Sculptris modeling program, the 3D modeling and animation program Blender, the MakerBot 3D Printer, a camera, and a recording software called OBS Studio. Through the use of these programs, I was able to create a 3D model that would later be printed out. The important thing when using these programs was in which way was I going to preserve the evidence of my process. I stuck to video making so that I was able to see all angles of the 3D model. Keeping in mind the concepts of space and self, I created a creature using these materials that would take up an adequate amount of space and would feel like an actual creature in scale.
Composition: For the composition of this assignment, I went onto my computer and utilize the 3D graphics modeling program Sculptris to create the creature in the video and photographs. The program was quite simple to use despite the imposing UI and starting sphere. Starting with the base sphere, I used the tools such as expand, draw, inflate, and smooth to essentially airbrush 'clay' material onto the existing sphere to create strange shapes. Using the symmetry tool, I was able to create symmetric shapes so that it would be a solid, visually-understandable creature. My workflow was a bit slower than I would have liked but since it was my first time using this program, but I would say it was satisfying to see the creation become reality as I worked. After creating the creature, I exported it as an obj file. As the 3D printer could not read obj, I went into the 3d Program Blender and imported the obj file. Exporting it as a stl file, I then transferred the file into MakerBot 3D Printer and printed it out. After 4 Hours. the process was done and here are the final results. As I had to scale up the creature in the program, the file is larger than it was when imported. This was to impose the idea of scale so that the creature took an appropriate amount of space.
Concept: The concept of the assignment was to create a creature that would be representative of me. The creature's base is that of a duck which is one of my favorite animals. The crab-like claws represent my love for seafood, the tail acts as sort of base and balancing part that reminds me of whales or crocodiles which are animals that I like. Atop the duck base is a figure flying out of the creature. It represents my desire to succeed and aspire to great things in my career as an artist and educator. It also represents the idea of creativity and its omnipresent role in my life. For self, the creation itself represents me, my desires, aspirations, and interests. Due to its size, I had to scale it up from its file so that it would take up an appropriate amount of space as to represent me and stand alone as its own thing.
