Week 8: 3D Printing Sculpture Prelude
Week 8: This week, we once again switched into our next unit. For my group, we finished our trophies and wood sculptures and turned to our next tool, our 3D printer. As this is the first time our department has had one, we have much to learn but I am confident in our ability to succeed. For this week, we were to collect ten interesting google map screenshots of various sites from rural, city, residential, and industrial. These would be the prelude to our first assignment, creating an architectural sculpture.
Craft: This assignment we were limited in what we would use practically. As this is not a product-based assignment, the materials were selected specifically for research and 'sketching'. For the craft, I used a computer and google maps as my tools and resources for this assignment. The important part was making sure that the screenshots were not only high quality, but also clearly showed a composition that suited the future assignment. This was to make sure the idea of space was conveyed well. Since this is not an assignment or a product that I am producing the main thing that was desired was utility.
Composition: For the composition of this assignment, I went onto google maps and began randomly researching different locations that would coincide with the requirements for the assignment. Using a mac computer, I used the shift+command+4 command key to capture a screenshot of the aerial view of the location that I had selected. Making sure that the camera was close enough that I could the individual buildings but still see the whole layout of the location was a little challenging to get right. But eventually, I managed to get it at a spot that was adequate for most locations, having the distance maker at the bottom right corner at 200 feet. During this process, the concepts of space and place were at the foremost when composing these pictures. Making sure that they were clear, concise, and most importantly reproducible in a 3D computer program were very important when consider which places to screen cap and which to discard. Some things I looking for were areas with a lot of space between structures and for places with large focal points that would catch the eye on a later date when it would be recreated.
Concept: The concept of the assignment we were given was to collect ten images of locations of various types that would be interesting both location-wise and practically as well. I needed the images to be reasonably sized that I would be able to gather the appropriate buildings and layout while at the same time getting a nice composition while being reproduction-ally possible due to the sheer complexity of the layouts of buildings. Finding a variety of locations was very important to have a diverse compositional library when we would eventually create our own layouts based on these screenshots. I chose mostly cityscapes because I find it most interesting and rewarding as a composition and concept when it comes to the core interest in this class, place and space. The difficulty that will come is finding how the self will fit in to this project. Luckily these images have a distance scale that will help determine the size calculation of a scale model of these locations.
