Week 11: Final Project Part 1

Week 11: This week, we began to work on our final project, a collaborative project with the other groups in our class to create a virtual gallery with rooms for each of us in preparation for next week when we will be working on mini galleries created in laser cut wood. For this week, we were tasked with sketching out a virtual reality version of the woodcut gallery we would make at a later date. This is the results.

Craft: For the craft, I used the following tools: VIVE Virtual Reality Headset, Tilt Brush 3D VR Painting App, a computer, and flash drive. It was a return to the tools I had used in the first few weeks of the course in which I was part of the VR group in the first round of class. And now we come full circle. The important thing when using this program was in which way was I going to preserve the essence and feel of the composition. I stuck to screenshots of different angels and video making so that I was able to see all angles of the space. Keeping in mind the concepts of space and self, I created the gallery using large broad brushes that would convey an adequate amount of space and would feel like an actual gallery building in scale. Through this use of large sweeping motion and broad brush strokes, the conveyance of a person in a large building was achieved.

Composition: For the composition of this assignment, what I did was I first went into the virtual reality program, Tilt Brush and created my gallery spot. As this was in a city environment, the need to have a city-like building composition like a store with limited space would be limiting factor in what exactly I could create. As the basic layout of all of our rooms in the main file was established, all I needed to do was create the walls and sketch roughly the interior layout where the paintings would be and that sort. Following that, I created a short video and screen capture using the program's in-game capture device and transferred them to my computer. After that, I uploaded them here. As a 3D sketch, it will be used to establish a layout plan for my woodcut design later on this week. Making sure to create an adequate space for what will later be paintings and other works of art of a classic gallery with a large expansive room, massive walls, and the use of natural light in the design to establish a sense of place for anyone that will explore within.

Concept: The concept of the assignment was to create a 3D sketch of an art gallery. This gallery would be used as a sketch in which I would design a physical woodcut design scaled down to that of around a shoe box in size. I wanted to create a gallery in which it would be a singular room of grand scale, like an atrium which to me are the architectural designs that I enjoy the most. I also wanted to utilize natural light as much as I can so that is why I added a large skylight and storefront windows. I feel much more at home and at ease with natural lighting, even if it is a gray and rainy day. I feel less restricted which is something I wanted in my art gallery sketch. As someone influence a lot by the concept art of grand halls and atriums from my work in game concept art, I decided that a large room would be the most appropriate setting for me as it would focus a lot in space which would transform the view of the person, the self, into a place which exudes an awe in the viewer.
