Week 12: Drafting Final Project

Week 12: This week, we continued to work on our final project, a collaborative project with the other groups in our class to create an art gallery for ourselves. This week we are simply drafting out the layouts of our mini galleries before we go and cut them out in laser cut wood. This is the results.

Craft: For the craft, I used the following tools: pencil and graph paper, rulers/straightedges, yardsticks, Adobe Illustrator, a computer, and flash drive. As this was an application of concept into a physical composition, we had to be meticulous and precise in what exactly it was that we were envisioning. As we will be using a limited resource pool of wood for our projects, making sure that all things were accounted for and materials were used responsibly was a major consideration.  As this was in proportion, understanding the reality of what we were making and how scale would play into its final construction was important for our consideration of space, place, and the self because proportion would play a key part in exactly how tall, long, and wide the final results would be when thinking of the idea of scale in relation to the self and for practicalities of space for said place.

Composition: For the composition of this assignment, what I did was I first thought of what kind of gallery would I be creating. As I had based my current draft design off of the VR sketch that I had created, the general shape was already in mind. But as this was a 2D Plane, working to achieve a 3D object with proper scaling and proportions would be a challenge. As the wood boards, we will be using are limited to 24x12 inches in scale for the laser cutter and 1/8 inch in depth, we had our limiting factors. And as this was created in scale, we had to have a set of lengths to equate certain real-life lengths such as 1/4 inch is one foot. With that being the case, it became easy to proportion the various sides of the construction by following the conversion of lengths. I created a simple rectangular building reminiscent of a standard storefront but with a longer depth, wider front, and much taller height. After creating the pieces in paper with careful considerations given to the sides in which would be the supporting structure of the building. After that, I transferred the images to illustrator and created a laser cutter-ready file. Following the same techniques as previous projects in this class, I created the illustrator file.

Concept: The concept of the assignment was to create a 2D draft of an art gallery that would represent us. This 2D design draft will later be created as a physical woodcut design scaled down to that of around a shoe box in size. I wanted to create a gallery in which it would be a singular room of grand scale, like an atrium which to me are the architectural designs that I enjoy the most. I also wanted to utilize natural light as much as I can so that is why I added a large skylight and storefront windows. As the ceiling will be some thirty feet up, the scale and feeling of that of a cathedral or a large central atrium are what I was going for in this assignment. I feel much more at home and at ease with natural lighting, even if it is a gray and rainy day. And from the galleries that I have attended, one in which natural light has been utilized have always been memorable and inviting. I feel less restricted which is something I wanted in my art gallery. As someone influence a lot by the concept art of grand halls and atriums from my work in game concept art, I decided that a large room would be the most appropriate setting for me as it would focus a lot in space which would transform the view of the person, the self, into a place which exudes an awe in the viewer.
